US Markets This Week: August Jobs Report, Broadcom Earnings, Apple's New CEO
This week's market news - the August jobs report, why Broadcom stock fell after earnings, Robinhood Chain vs. Circle's Arc, and John Ternus as Apple's new CEO
TL;DR
August jobs report lands 8:30am ET today, hours before the open. Consensus: +53K to +56K, after July's shock -23K.
Broadcom beat on every number. Shares fell up to 10% after hours anyway.
Robinhood Chain's daily revenue topped Solana, Ethereum, and Tron on Sept 2 — a 22x jump in a week, powered by memecoins.
Circle's Arc, a Layer-1 for institutional stablecoin settlement, launches its mainnet Sept 16 with BlackRock and Visa as validators.
John Ternus took over as Apple CEO September 1, closing Tim Cook's 15-year run.
Macro Pulse: What the August Jobs Report Means for Tonight's Open The August jobs report drops at 8:30am ET today. Everything else this week is backdrop to that number.
July broke the pattern: payrolls fell 23,000 when economists expected growth. This week did nothing to reassure anyone. ADP's private payroll count, out Wednesday, came in at +38,000 — below the +48,000 consensus and slower than July's revised +46,000, the weakest hiring pace since January (Reuters). ADP tends to lead the official print. The odds of another disappointment are rising.
Metric July 2026 August 2026 Private payrolls (ADP) +46K (revised) +38K (miss) Nonfarm payrolls (BLS) -23K (shock) +53K to +56K (consensus, due today) Unemployment rate 4.1% 4.1% (consensus) Sources: Reuters, Trading Economics, BLS
A soft print pulls rate-cut bets forward — a tailwind for stocks, a drag on the dollar. A beat does the opposite. After July's whiplash, expect a loud reaction either way.
Earnings Spotlight: Why Broadcom Stock Fell After Beating Earnings Broadcom's quarter was strong by any measure. Revenue: $29.6 billion, up 86% year-over-year. AI revenue: up 221% to $16.7 billion. Management raised its long-range AI outlook to $58 billion this fiscal year, $115 billion in FY27, $230 billion by FY28 (CNBC).
Shares fell as much as 10% after hours anyway. Q4 guidance of $34.8 billion — still 93% growth — landed under whisper numbers that had run ahead of reality (TradingKey). Priced for perfection, punished for merely great. Expect the pattern to repeat across the rest of earnings season for anything AI-adjacent.
Crypto Corner: Robinhood Chain vs. Circle's Arc Layer-1 Robinhood Chain, the brokerage's own Layer-2 built on Arbitrum, generated $4.01 million in daily revenue on September 2 — more than Solana, Ethereum, and Tron that same day, and a 22x jump from six days earlier ( crypto.news ). Most of that volume is memecoins trading through the launchpad Pons, not the tokenized-stock trading the chain launched to showcase. Its 90-day gas subsidy expires September 29. That's when the real numbers show up.
Circle is betting the other direction. Its Layer-1, Arc, built for institutional stablecoin settlement, launches its public mainnet September 16, with BlackRock, DTCC, Mastercard, Visa, Standard Chartered, and the NYSE's parent company running validators (Crypto.com). One chain is a subsidized memecoin casino. The other is Wall Street building permanent rail. Same week, opposite theses on what crypto infrastructure is for.
Quick hits from the rest of the ecosystem:
A Cosmos exploit forced a 1.26 billion token bailout on the TAC network (CoinMarketCap)
BounceBit shut down its own Layer-1 after a $3M exploit, folding into BNB Chain (The Block)
Zcash hit an 8-year high on Grayscale's spot ETF filing (Crypto.com)
~$1.5B in tokens unlock this week across Hyperliquid, Sui, and Ethena (CryptoRank)
Leadership Watch: John Ternus Becomes Apple's New CEO John Ternus became Apple's CEO on September 1. Tim Cook moved into executive chairman after 15 years running the company (Apple Newsroom). Ternus, formerly SVP of hardware engineering, was named the pick in April after a long internal succession process (Reuters).
This won't move the stock. It sets the tone for Apple's next chapter as the company plays catch-up on AI — and for how Ternus's first earnings call under his own name lands later this year.
Heading Into Tonight A cooling labor market. An AI trade priced for perfection. Two chains betting on opposite futures for crypto. New leadership at one of the world's most-watched companies. It all lands on traders' desks at once tonight.
That's the moment Midas is built for — when a headline number misses, or a good quarter sells off anyway, and the instinct to react fast is exactly when a gut check matters most.
